Becoming What He Was Given

es egenomen ego diakonos

Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

The KJV's "I am made a minister" sounds passive, as though Paul were simply processed into an office by someone else's action, a stamp applied from outside.

The verb is *egenomen*, from *ginomai*, and it stands in the middle voice. Greek middle voice is neither fully active (I did this to something else) nor fully passive (this was done to me) — it marks the subject as personally invested in, and changed by, the action. Paul does not simply receive the label "minister" the way a parcel receives a postmark. He *became* one — the verb describes something happening in and to him, with him bound up in the becoming.

This reshapes how we hear "minister" (*diakonos*, servant). Paul is not reporting an external appointment he stood apart from; he is describing an event that made him into something he was not before, an event he was caught up in rather than merely subjected to or the sole author of. The stewardship (*oikonomia*) given him did not sit on top of Paul unchanged — it entered him and remade his identity.

Here is a small window into how grace actually works: not as decree stamped on a passive object, nor as achievement generated by an active agent, but as something given that becomes us — that we become through in the receiving. God's gift to Paul was not a title bolted on but a transformation Paul was truly inside of. This is worth worship: the God who assigns callings does not leave the called untouched by them. He does not merely use servants; he makes them, in the making using them, so that the calling and the person are no longer separable.

Today

Name one task or role God has given you and ask, honestly, whether you are merely performing it or being shaped by it — then pray that today's obedience would change you, not just occupy you.
