- Behind that phrase is a single Hebrew idiom built on one root, halakh, 'to walk' or 'to go.' The text reads telekh halokh v'qashah — literally 'it went, going and hardening.' The finite verb telekh ('it went') is doubled by the infinitive absolute halokh ('going') from the very same root. This is Hebrew's classic device for intensity: repeat the verb in two forms to say, unmistakably, that the action wasn't a single event but a continuous, deepening motion. There's no 'prospered' or 'prevailed' here at all — just 'going,' twice, describing the hand of Israel pressing harder and harder upon Jabin.
